die meisten irischen Hochkreuze bestehen aus Sandstein, für das 5,34m hohe Hochkreuz von Moone hat der unbekannte Künstler den viel härteren Granit bevorzugt. Zwei Teile des Kreuzes wurden Mitte des 19. Jahrhunderts in den Ruinen der Klosterkirche gefunden, das fehlende dritte Teil erst rund 50 Jahre später. Die zwölf Apostel stehen brav aufgereiht nebeneinander nahe der Basis des Kreuzes, auf dem Bild gut erkennbar. Das Kreuz erzählt Geschichten aus der Bibel; so finden wir zwei Fische, fünf Brote, Daniel in der Löwengrube, die Jünglinge im Feuerofen und die Flucht nach Ägypten. Das schöne, wertvolle Kreuz aus dem 9. Jahrhundert stand, lange der Witterung ausgesetzt, in der dachlosen Kirchenruine; bei meinem Besuch im September 2002 waren die Arbeiten für das neue Glasdach, welches das Kreuz vor Wind und Wetter schützen wird, wie man sieht, in vollem Gange.
most of the Irish high crosses consist of sandstone, the unknown artist who made this cross, preferred the much harder granite. Two parts of the cross were found in the middle of the 19th century within the ruins of the Moone Abbey; the missing third part about 50 years later. The twelve Apostles stand lined up next to each other, near the base, well visible in the picture. The cross, 5,34m tall, tells stories from the Bible; thus we find two fish, five loafes of bread, Daniel in the lion pit, the young men in the fire furnace and the escape to Egypt. The valuable cross dates from the 9th century and was located for a long time inside the roofless ruin of the church; when I visited Moone in September 2002 the work for the new glass roof, which will protect the cross against wind and weather, was in full progress.
